Children are our “Gold” at the End of the Rainbow!

Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve is an adventurous wonderland for children of all ages. All year long, we encourage and guide children to explore our 170-acres of rolling woodlands, creeks, waterfalls, 9.5 miles of trails, and open grasslands. We create discovery experiences where children may see a fawn take its first wobbly steps, hear the call of a Pileated Woodpecker or watch a Monarch butterfly land on a milkweed blossom.

As a public charity that is visitor supported, your financial support makes all the difference in helping us continue to serve you and the thousands of children who come on school field trips, attend events, summer camps, family campouts, and practice sports here.

Will you consider making a tax-deductible donation today? No amount is too small and every penny makes a difference.

Tax Benefits of Donating Appreciated Assets

Many individuals discover they can recognize substantial tax benefits by donating long term appreciated assets to charity. If you sell an appreciated asset, then the gain on the sale is taxable. However, if you donate an appreciated asset that has been held longer than 12 months to Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve, the gain is not taxable and the market value of the donation is a deductible item.

For example, an individual owns stock that was purchased in 1995 for $2,000 and it now has appreciated to a value of $12,000. By donating the stock to Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve, the individual does not have to pay taxes on the $10,000 capital gain and also may deduct the fair market value of the stock on the date of the gift (subject to IRS limitations). The IRS deduction limit for long-term appreciated asset gifts is 30% of adjusted gross income.

If the shareholder had sold the shares and donated cash, capital gain taxes would be due for most individuals at both the federal and state level resulting in either less funds available for the charity or a greater cost to the individual to make an equivalent size gift.

The most common forms of appreciated assets donated are publicly traded stocks and mutual funds.  In most cases they are easily transferred and valued for deduction purposes.

Give a Memorial Tree

Horse Chestnut Blossoms 750px

You can remember a loved one by planting a memorial tree at Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve. This horse chestnut tree blooming on the hillside near the Spring House was donated by the Goshen Post Office in memory of Jonathon Powell. Gerry Keifer lived near the Nature Preserve and walked her dog here regularly. A red dogwood was dedicated to her memory on May 19th at NatureFest.

Trees, flowers and shrubs can keep you close to someone who is deceased, but they can also be given in honor of someone still living – for a birth, graduation, or other celebration. Couples who marry here like to plant a Sweetheart Tree representing their relationship. To learn more, call (502) 228-4362 or email us at Info@KYNaturePreserve.org.

Donation amount for a memorial tree is $400-$600, which includes the tree purchase, installation, tree bag watering system, and 1-year maintenance.

Give a Memorial Bench

What could be better than sitting on a bench in a beautiful setting and thinking of your special friend or loved one.
